Acupuncture is a safe, effective, and non-invasive back pain treatment that can help you get back on your feet after chronic or recurring back pain. Our expert team here at Destination Wellness Center may recommend acupuncture on its own, or in combination with other minimally invasive treatment options for back pain.

How Acupuncture Can Help Back Pain

During acupuncture, your practitioner will insert small, thin, sterile needles into strategic treatment areas of your body. These needles stimulate your body’s nerves and cells to release pain-killing endorphins. Acupuncture can also trigger the release of natural opioids in the body that lessen pain and promote sleep. Acupuncture has also been shown to change your overall brain chemistry by releasing neurotransmitters and neurohormones that stimulate or dampen nerve impulses.

Will Acupuncture Work for You?

Chiropractors don’t recommend the use of prescription pain medication or invasive surgeries to manage chronic back pain and may recommend acupuncture if other treatment methods have been ineffective, or if you prefer the least invasive back pain treatments available. You may not be a good candidate for acupuncture if you are taking certain medications, are pregnant, wear a pacemaker, or have an implant.

What to Expect During Acupuncture

When you visit Destination Wellness Center for acupuncture, you will be able to remain clothed other than at the area to be treated. You will lie down on a comfortable bed or treatment table. Your practitioner may dim the lights or play soothing music to increase your relaxation. They will select the appropriate areas in which to insert the needles and then remove sterile needles from their packaging and begin inserting them into the strategic points. Your session may last 30 to 40 minutes, and your practicioner may leave the room after the needles are inserted, so that you can relax.
