How to Prevent Neck Pain While Sitting at Your Computer Desk

Written By Destination Wellness on September 4, 2019

Woman with neck pain As the technology industry continues to grow across the United States, so does the number of workers spending 8+ hours per day sitting at the computer each year. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that, for example, software developers and others engaged in similar technology positions spend approximately 90% of their day sitting at the computer.

What does this mean for many? Pain in the neck. Fortunately, applying certain tips and tricks each day – along with regular chiropractic neck pain treatment – can drastically reduce the instances of chronic neck pain.

3 Ways to Reduce Neck Pain

Reducing neck pain at work begins with remembering simple tips throughout the day, including:

1. Maintain Proper Posture

Proper posture in the computer chair is one way to help eliminate neck pain. First, be sure that both feet are flat on the floor and legs are uncrossed. Also, be sure to sit as far back in the chair as possible with the spine aligned with the back of the chair. Be sure to avoid sitting on the edge of the seat (known as “perching”) and check regularly to ensure you are not leaning to one side or the other.

2. Adjust the Screen

It is important to ensure the height of the screen is properly adjusted to a level that allows the head to rest naturally on the shoulders. In other words, if your head is too high or too low, the screen is in the wrong position. Reason being, the weight of the adult human head is generally between 10 and 12 pounds, and the neck muscles are ill-equipped to hold that kind of weight for prolonged periods without experiencing fatigue or strain.

3. Maintain Regular Chiropractic Care

One of the greatest misconceptions of chiropractic care is that once a patient starts coming, they’ll never be able to stop. This is simply a misunderstanding of the chiropractic role. At the outset of neck pain, treatments may be more frequent. Once pain is stabilized, however, the only necessary appointments will be for maintenance and proper alignment – a staple of the chiropractic care regimen.
